One of the first things that people ask me when they inquire about a PenDachs
puppy is "How much do you sell each puppy for"? I have to be honest and say
that I really hate that question although I know it is a necessary one. A lot of
people are only interested in knowing the price of a puppy and don't realize the
differences in getting a properly bred puppy versus getting one from a BYB (back
yard breeder). I did this page in hopes that I could explain the difference in a
puppy that is properly bred versus that puppy in the pet store window or in your
neighbors back yard. There is so much thought, research, time, and money that
goes into a proper breeding that most people don't realize. Below is a list that
hopefully explains why my puppies are priced higher than ones produced by a
BYB.
A PenDachs Puppy
1. A PenDachs bitch and the sire used
to father a litter have been shown in
AKC conformation. There have been
unbiased judges comparing those dogs
to the breed standard to determine if
they are of breeding quality. Any dog
or bitch that is used for breeding at
PenDachs has been pointed or finished
to a Championship title.
2. A PenDachs bitch and the sire used
have been health tested for genetic eye
defects and patella problems. Both
parents have been cleared of either of
these issues.
3. A PenDachs puppy comes with
breeder support for the life of the
puppy. A puppy will be gladly taken
back that was bred at PenDachs
regardless of the reason.
4. A PenDachs puppy comes with a 3
to 5 generation pedigree that we have
researched at length to make sure that
we are not overlooking previous health
issues and abnormalities. Nearly all of
the dogs and bitches on the pedigree
will be finished champions that have
had the scrutiny of numerous unbiased
judges. That is over 60 dogs and
bitches that have been thru the same
screening process of judges.
5. A PenDachs puppy has been bred
after much thought and consideration.
We look at the bitch we have and find
a sire that compliments that bitch well.
We are breeding true to the AKC
standard for our breed.
6. A PenDachs puppy comes RAW fed.
A raw diet is what Mother Nature
intended for dogs to eat. This diet
allows the proper growth and
development of our puppies and meets
all of their nutritional needs.
7. A PenDachs puppy comes vaccine
free. Their immune systems are healthy
and strong because their mother has
been provided meat that is a natural
diet for a Carnivore and is
unvaccinated herself. They get plenty
of fresh meat and water daily and that
helps to insure that their bodies are
strong if they would happen to be
exposed to a virus.
8. A PenDachs puppy was bred with
temperament in mind. We are
choosing a bitch and a sire that have
temperaments that follow the AKC
standard. Our puppies are socialized
and temperament tested so that we
can place our puppies in an
appropriate home.
9. A PenDachs bitch is bred with the
intention of improving the breed and
producing a puppy for US first and
foremost. We keep our puppies longer
to evaluate their structure and
temperament before placing them. The
pup we keep will be continuing our
lines in the future thus we have to be
thorough when choosing the
breedings that we do.
Pet Store/BYB Puppy
1. This bitch and dog are thrown
together as soon as the bitch is able
to breed. Sometimes the sire of the
litter is not known for sure and the
bitch is often bred throughout it's
entire life. No one is judging either
dogs conformation at all.
2. This bitch and dog have had no
health testing done and minimal
health care overall.
3. These breeders are either unknown
if the puppy came from the pet store
or they are uneducated in the case of
a BYB. While the BYB may have good
intentions they will be unable to
answer most of your questions and
are not likely to take a pup back.
4. These breeders will likely not have
a pedigree for the litter or perhaps
one parent will be AKC reg. and the
other CKC or UKC or possibly not
even at all. They are not aware of the
health history of the dogs listed on
the pedigree.
5. A BYB is breeding the dogs and
bitches that they have on hand
without the knowledge of what the
AKC standard calls for with this
breed. Doing this can result in poor
structure which in the long run results
in poor health, increased vet bills,
back problems, and heartache for the
buyer of these puppies.
6. A Pet store or BYB feeds kibble to
their puppies. Kibble is cheap and
NOT an ideal diet for a dog let alone a
growing puppy. It is full of fillers, by
products, and chemicals with very
little real meat.
7. These puppies have had their
bodies assaulted with numerous
poisons. Their parents have been
vaccinated thus allowing those
harmful toxins to be passed on to the
puppies. When the pups themselves
are vaccinated their systems are
assaulted with as many as 7 viruses at
one given time and this process is
repeated numerous times slowly
killing the immune system. Due to the
over vaccination these puppies are
more susceptible to illnesses
throughout their life raising the costs
of YOUR vet bills.
8. Temperament has not been
considered with these breedings.
Available dogs and bitches are bred to
produce puppies to sale and money to
make.
9. Continuing their lines is not
something that a BYB is considering.
They don’t have any lines to speak
of and are only producing more
mediocre dogs like those that fill the
Humane Society everyday.
Now, after reading all of the differences above when you consider the cost of a
PenDachs puppy remember these things. A responsible breeder has paid $1,000
to $2000 for their own bitch and dog. If they don’t own the sire to the litter
the stud fees ranged from $400 to $1,000. The breeder has spent in excess of
$1,000 to $5,000 on show related expenses. Entry fees, supplies, gasoline, and
hotel costs add up quickly. There’s been the cost of the health testing which
was around $200. Then the breeder has incurred the cost of progesterone
testing, ultrasounds, x-rays, and any other medical care the bitch may require. If
a c-section is required that bill just increased $1,000 to $1,500.
I hope that reading this page has helped you to understand why a properly bred
puppy from PenDachs costs more than the BYB’s puppies do. As you can see
this is not a get rich quick scheme when the health of the puppy and the
betterment of the breed is the top priority. Our puppy prices will range from
$750.00 to $1200.00 depending on the litter, the puppy, and the parents. Please
contact us for further details and for pricing on an individual puppy. As we’ve
mentioned before we do not sell puppies for the sole purpose of breeding. If you
don’t compete in AKC or UKC events do not email me looking for a puppy with
breeding rights.
